First off, let me start off wishing you all a fabulous year ahead in 2010. I wish you all prosperity and success in the coming year. We had travelled across 3 cities (Chennai, Pune and Bangalore), in December 09 on a road show titled “Microsoft Interop Days”. We were quite overwhelmed with the response we had received and we look forward to seeing you all in our next trip. If some of you could not make it to the event, please do register with us on Area91.in so that we can inform you about our future events and Webcasts. On the sessions we had showcased at the event, was the ca...

I had in the past written on IE 8 for Windows XP and how people are still running IE6 and are missing out some of the great web developer friendly things, IE has to offer. Now, one of them is Web Slices whereby a portion of your web page can be “subscribed to” meaning that, whenever the content is updated, that portion starts getting highlighted. You can read more on Web slices and also add a few to your IE8 browser from http://ieaddons.com/en/webslices/ Now, with Webslices and Accelerators for PHP, you can extend the web slice functionality to your PHP based websites and get better ex...

The Windows Cache Extension for PHP (WinCache) 1.0 is now RTW – open sourced on the PECL extension library under BSD with the source code hosted and maintained on http://pecl.php.net/packages/wincache/ and the documentation hosted on php.net: http://us.php.net/wincache/. WinCache significantly accelerates the performance of PHP applications on Windows without requiring code changes by the application. Some of the blogs that mention this announcement are - http://www.iis-aid.com/articles/performance_testing/wincache_performance_live_site http://blog.calevans.com/2009/09/06/wincache/ http:/...

I have been wanting to drop a post for a long time and after Praveens Post on Data Patterns, I thought I also start on some of these fundamentals that will help you understand some of these principles better … Let us get into the actual topic - In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) was one of the most popular and innovative topics. But the entry fee to purchase an RDBMS system was out of the reach of many small businesses and workgroups. Though in my various jobs I have had an opportunity to work on many database vendors, it also gave me an uniqu...

Guest blog by Vinu Thomas, PHP Community Lead (Bangalore) Vinu’s detailed profile can be found at: http://blog.area91.in/page/Area91-Guest-Bloggers.aspx A few weeks back I had attended the Virtual Tech Days events, specifically the Interop sessions. I was quite interested in seeing what Microsoft had to offer for PHP developers. Going through the oveview of the programs, they seem to have come up with quite a few solutions for PHP developers. One of the important integrations for PHP is the ability to run PHP directly from IIS, as a FastCGI app, without having to install Apache in Windows...

Guest blog by Praveen Srivatsa, Founder and Director of AsthraSoft. Praveen’s detailed profile can be found at: http://blog.area91.in/page/Area91-Guest-Bloggers.aspx One of the technologies under software development is the concept of relational databases. Late in 1970's Codds rules for database normalization set a benchmark that most RDBMs have tried to support. But the process of designing a database is unusually not as refined in most software companies. Even today, we still have projects that fail due to a badly designed database. There are religious discussions on which database i...

As we talk more about Interoperability on this website you will notice that there are various facets to it. From making a software available on different platforms to enabling exchange of data between two disparate applications there could be numerous interesting and complicated scenario. I would primarily be focusing on the developer aspect of Interoperability for e.g. a simplistic use of an old win32 (C++ or VC++) dll in a .NET application to a more challenging scenario of exchanging information between a .NET applications running on Windows and a Java application running on Linux. While the...

Hello PHP Developers, I am excited to be able to talk to you. Hello PHP World is an introductory post but I want to make it useful to you. The first thing you would want to do for getting started oh PHP Development on Windows is to install the Microsoft Web Platform (http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx) Why should you install Web Platform? It installs getting all the components for developing on the Microsoft Web Platform that traditionally you have to configure separately, in the past. The Web PI installs Internet Information Services (IIS), the free SQL ...

Interoperability… is that just another catch phrase or is there any sense behind all the hype. You may ask “What’s the big deal about Interoperability??” Let me first try and address that.
